Musical Chairs (2022) is a ritualistic performance exploring themes of sacrifice, transformation, and the cyclical nature of life. Nine masked figures participate in a surreal game of musical chairs, dancing around a vibrantly colored tree. As the game concludes, the "winner" is symbolically transformed into a knitted doll, which is then ceremonially hung from the tree and consumed by the other participants. The performance unfolds as an ongoing cycle, with new participants joining each time, keeping the ritual alive.
The tree, constructed from wood and encased in paper-mâché, serves as the symbolic heart of the performance. It represents the cycle of life—growth, decay, and renewal—while acting as a site of both sacrifice and transformation.
Musical Chairs was realized in collaboration with Dakota Magdalena Mokhammad.
